About
Us
Robin & Sue McConnell
We have
been sharing our home with basenjis for 20
years and could not imagine our lives without them.
We bought our first basenji, Rudi, from a
breeder in Port Elizabeth in 1987. Our pack increased
by 4 in 1996 when we bought Lissu (the mother) and Kassu (the
father) and 2 of their puppies (Bonni & Tumi). The parents
were imported from Finland by a close friend,
Margaret Penney and it was through her that we were introduced
to the Furahan kennel owned by Päivi Sälomäki
and Helena Myyryläinen.
Even though
the Basenji is African we decided to use
Finnish names for our dogs. Our first litter has been named
after Finnish racing drivers as we know how quick these little
dogs are!
Our basenjis
are very much part of our lives and even
though we have a registered kennel, KAUNIS
(meaning beautiful in Finnish) we have only
had one litter and will breed after careful consideration
and consultation with other breeders. We do show our
dogs and have achieved good results to date. We are
always thrilled when basenji are recognized and well judged
as so little is known about this rare breed.
We work
closely with the other reputable breeders in South
Africa (MARIKATE & KITOKOMBWA) to ensure that
the gene pool is well managed.

THE BASENJI – By Jeraldeen Crandall 1967
B
is for Barkless, but not really mute.
They chortle and yodel, mutter and growl
I think they could talk if ever they learnt how.
A
is for Agile, graceful and quick.
They jump like deer and play like a cat.
Who ever heard of a dog acting like that?
S
is for Stubborn, yes they do have a streak.
They’ll coax and they’ll bully till they get their
own way.
Outsmarting a human is just part of their day.
E
is for Entertaining, they’re all hams at heart.
Ask them to play and they’ll act like a clown.
Tell them to heel and they’ll sit down and frown.
N
is for Neat, a must in themselves.
They lick and they groom till each hair is in place.
If they think that you need it, they’ll come wash your
face.
J
is for Jungle, natives and huts.
On the tombs of the Pharaohs their pictures are found,
And in Africa’s jungles they’re the belled hunting
hound.
I
is for Me. An owner possessed,
I feed and I doctor, I worry and care.
And that doggone Basenji knows, when he calls, I’ll
be there.
